Carvings in stone and wood

Stone carving sculpture (1)

 Portrait HeadPortrait Head

This is a life-size portrait of a young Greek woman. This stone carving sculpture was made from
marble quarried from Mount Pentelicon near Athens.This is the same mountain from which the marble
was quarried for building the Parthenon.It was sent to the studio of Giovanni Ardini in Rome where I
made this stone carving sculpture under his sensitive guidance. The base is integral with the piece
as a whole and was carved by Pasqualino, assistant to Giovanni Ardini.

Wood carving sculpture

Antigone Antigone

Height=250mm Length=210mm Width=210mm

This wood carving sculpture is in elmwood. The model for the work was the actress Dinah Stabb who
performed the principal role in Sophocles' play 'Antigone' at the Cockpit Theatre in London.
In spite of her pleading, Antigone fears that her brother will not receive a proper burial,
as he had been branded a traitor by King Creon and his burial refused.
Antigone secretly buried her brother and his body was returned to the earth.
This play bears witness to the importance of the feminine, to family relationship and to the meaning of burial.

Obeisance Obeisance

Height=330mm Length=225mm Width=200mm

This wood carving sculpture is also in elmwood
Man making an obeisance to the earth was my response to Maurice Strong's
remark after the World Summit in Rio da Janeiro in 1992 of which he had been the convenor
that the people of the West have to change their lifestyle if life on earth is to be sustainable.
Has anything changed thirteen years later?
Yes, that irreversible unsustainability is only approximately 20 years ahead !
Or is it ? Scientists at the US national Snow and Ice Data centre at Colorado University
and Arctic ice specialist Professor Wadhams at Cambridge University believe that current
data may indicate we have already reached irreversible climate change !(September 2005).
