Vajra Woodcarving

A vajra comprises a central point, the seed of the spirit and the axis and heart
of the universe, and a symmetrical arrangement of lotus flowers from which flash
two groups of flames.
The lotus is an expression of the nature of the individual, born in mud, but
through traversing life, death and rebirths can eventually by means of
training the mind subsequently blossom in the enlightenment of nirvana.
Vajra means diamond and signifies its indestructibility.
The vajra displays two identical halves symbolic of the identity of samsara with
its pain and suffering on the one hand and of nirvana with its peace, happiness
and wisdom on the other.

The vajra also symbolises the love of the Buddhas and the means of release
from samsara. The vajra with its male polarity is inseparable from a bell with
its female polarity. Their union enables phenomena to become one with the numinous,
beyond duality in the awareness, compassion and wisdom of enlightenment that is
as indestructible as diamond.

Vagra woodcarving

The double vajra, as in this woodcarving, engenders all that exists in the heart
of the representation of the universe, which is to say in the very heart of the
person in meditation, in awareness of his or her buddha nature, and the whole cosmos
is reflected in that spirit as if in a flawless mirror.

This woodcarving is made from limewood. The carving has been treated
with Danish oil and then polished with 'Antiquax' wax polish.

It has been given to the Rigpa sangha in Bristol. Click for the Rigpa website
